Travelling in Tuscany is one of the great pleasures of visiting Italy. Wandering the Renaissance streets of Florence, exploring Medieval hilltop towns like San Gimignano and Monteriggioni and sitting down to long, memorable meals with a glass of the famous Chianti wine. But for a trip to run smoothly you have to make sure you’ve taken care of all the details, from transport tickets, to restaurant bookings, navigation and staying connected.

Fortunately, a number of excellent apps and websites can make travelling through Tuscany much simpler. Whether you’re catching a train between cities, booking a table for dinner in Florence, organising last-minute insurance or organising your travel plans, these tools can remove a lot of friction from your trip.

Below we’ve put together a list of some of the most useful digital resources to have ready before arriving in Tuscany.

Navigating Tuscany with Maps and Driving Apps

Tuscany’s landscapes are easy on the eyes, but navigating them isn’t always straightforward. Historic city centres are filled with narrow, one-way streets, while the countryside is a maze of winding rural roads that  aren’t always well signposted.

Google Maps

Google Maps is still hands-down the most useful navigation tool for most travellers. It works well for driving directions, walking routes through historic cities and public transport information. If you’re heading to some of the more out of the way places where mobile reception is less reliable, it can be a good idea to download your maps offline before you go.

Waze

If you are renting a car, many travellers also like using Waze alongside Google Maps. The app provides real-time information about traffic conditions, road closures and speed cameras. This can be particularly helpful when driving near larger cities or navigating unfamiliar roads.

Muoversi in Toscana

This app developed by the Regione Toscana allows you to check timetables, plan routes and see connections between different transport services, making it easier to travel between cities, towns and smaller villages in Tuscany. For visitors relying on public transport, it can be a useful way to understand how the regional network fits together.

EasyPark

If you’re driving in Tuscany, the EasyPark app can make parking much simpler. Instead of searching for a parking meter, the app allows you to start, stop and pay for your parking session directly from your phone. You can also extend your parking time remotely if you’re running late, and you only pay for the time you actually use.

Staying in Touch with e-SIMs and Data Apps

Having reliable mobile data can make travelling significantly easier. From checking train schedules and navigating streets to translating menus or messaging your accommodation host, many aspects of travel now depend on having a stable internet connection.

Airalo

Rather than using expensive roaming plans, many visitors now choose to install an eSIM before arriving in Italy. Services like Airalo allow travellers to purchase a mobile data plan digitally and activate it via a QR code. Within minutes your phone is connected to a local network without needing to visit a shop or swap out your physical SIM card.

Holafly

Another popular option is Holafly which we’ve used ourselves. This offers unlimited data plans for travellers visiting Europe. It can be especially useful if you rely heavily on navigation apps or plan to use your phone as a hotspot while travelling.

Setting up mobile data before you land means you’ll have internet access the moment you arrive, making it easier to find your way into the city or contact your accommodation.
